Aravalli mountain range: Due to the new definition of the Aravalli range, there is a heated atmosphere across the country. Meanwhile, the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, said that some people are spreading misinformation.

Bhupender Yadav said that some people are spreading misinformation. The new definition does not mean that 90 percent of the Aravalli region will lose its protection; rather, it means that 90 percent of the hills will be given special protection.
What is the controversy regarding Aravalli mountain range?
The matter began on November 20, 2025, when the Supreme Court gave a new definition for the Aravalli mountain range. The definition stated that only those areas within 100 meters of the range would be considered part of the Aravallis.
Understand that the current criticism is not directed at the Supreme Court itself, but rather at the fact that the Supreme Court has now directed the state authorities to decide whether or not mining will be allowed in this mountain range.
The most important point is that what was previously considered forest land will now be considered state land. It remains to be seen what will be the criteria for setting records by state governments and how strict the environmental clearance will be.

What did Bhupendra Yadav say about the Aravalli mountain range?
Bhupendra Yadav, the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, stated that misinformation is being spread about the new definition of the Aravalli range. He clarified that according to the new definition, it’s not the case that only mountains 100 meters or taller will be considered part of the Aravalli range. He further added that height is not the determining factor; the geographical spread of the mountain range at ground level is what matters.
The government cannot simply grant permission for mining anywhere. This new definition will actually increase protection. Do not spread the illusion that the mountain which is 100 meters high is only a part of the Aravalli mountain.
Why is the Aravalli mountain range important?
The Aravalli mountain range is a very ancient mountain range. These mountains provide a habitat for many species of animals. They also protect four states: Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Gujarat. If this mountain range is tampered with in any way, it could create a very big problem. The Aravalli range prevents the Thar Desert from expanding.
These are some of the problems that could arise from cutting down the Aravalli mountains:
- There will be a water shortage. The mountains help in storing groundwater.
- Pollution will increase.
- They prevent dust from spreading.
- Many animals will lose their homes.
- Farmers will face difficulties in growing crops.
- People will have to migrate because cutting down the mountains will lead to the expansion of desert areas.
