Rahul Gandhi Detained After Protest Near PM Residence Over NEET Paper Leak
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and several Opposition leaders were detained by the Delhi Police on Tuesday after staging a sit-in protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence at Lok Kalyan Marg. The demonstration was organised over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, alleged police action against students, and the Opposition’s demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The police later shifted the detained leaders to different locations, including Chhatrasal Stadium and Mandir Marg Police Station, before releasing them a few hours later. Congress claimed that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were mistreated during the detention, while the Delhi Police has not publicly responded to those allegations.
Congress Leaders Released After Brief Detention
After nearly two hours in custody, Rahul Gandhi and other detained leaders were released from Chhatrasal Stadium. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who had been taken to Mandir Marg Police Station, was also released later in the evening.
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi visited Mandir Marg Police Station to meet party leaders and workers who had been detained during the protest. The visit became one of the major political moments of the day as Congress continued to accuse the government of suppressing democratic protests.

Protest Was Linked to the NEET-UG 2026 Paper Leak Row
According to Congress, the march towards the Prime Minister’s residence was organised to demand accountability over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy and the alleged police crackdown on students protesting a day earlier.
Rahul Gandhi stated that the Opposition wanted answers directly from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing the Centre of avoiding discussion on an issue that had affected lakhs of students across the country. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also joined the sit-in, saying the party would continue raising students’ concerns inside and outside Parliament.
Several Congress MPs and workers reportedly tied themselves together with ropes during the demonstration before police intervened and detained them.
Government Says Rahul Gandhi Changed His Demands
The political controversy intensified after Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh shared the government’s version of the negotiations held at the protest site.
According to Singh, Rahul Gandhi initially agreed to withdraw the protest if the government accepted a discussion in Parliament on the NEET paper leak and related issues. He claimed that after the government agreed to this demand, Rahul Gandhi introduced another condition by seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Jitendra Singh alleged that the Leader of the Opposition had “changed the goalposts” and refused to vacate the high-security zone despite repeated requests, calling the move inconsistent with parliamentary traditions.
Congress, however, rejected the government’s claims. Party spokesperson Pawan Khera argued that the Centre had no authority to decide what demands the Opposition could raise and insisted that the government should apologise for the police action against protesting students.

BJP Calls Protest a ‘Politics of Anarchy’
The Bharatiya Janata Party strongly criticised the protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence.
BJP president Nitin Nabin described Rahul Gandhi’s sit-in as a “symbol of anarchy” and called it a “black day in Indian politics.” According to the BJP, the Prime Minister’s official residence is a high-security zone and not a designated protest site. The party maintained that while democratic protests are acceptable, demonstrations outside such sensitive locations cross established political boundaries.
The BJP also accused the Congress of attempting to politicise the NEET issue instead of participating through normal parliamentary procedures.
PM Modi’s Response on the Paper Leak Issue
Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not directly address the protest, his remarks on the NEET controversy were shared during the NDA parliamentary meeting through Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
According to Rijiju, the Prime Minister said the government acted swiftly after the paper leak surfaced, resulting in multiple arrests. He also stated that a fresh NEET examination was conducted without unnecessary delay and stressed that those responsible for paper leaks should receive the strictest possible punishment.
The Prime Minister reportedly urged all states to work together to eliminate examination fraud and strengthen the credibility of the country’s recruitment and entrance examination system.
Political Tensions Continue Ahead of Parliament Debate
The detention of Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders has added another layer of political confrontation during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. While the Opposition continues demanding accountability over the NEET paper leak and student protests, the government insists it is ready for discussion but accuses Congress of turning the issue into political theatre.
As the debate over examination reforms, student safety, and parliamentary accountability continues, the confrontation is expected to remain one of the biggest political stories of the session.
