Terrorist Attack; On Sunday, while people were celebrating the Jewish Hanukkah festival at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, gunfire suddenly broke out.
Following the mass shooting at Bondi Beach, the Hanukkah festival scheduled to be held in Melbourne has been cancelled. This is the first mass shooting in Australia in 22 years. Large-scale shootings in Australia are rare; strict gun laws were implemented after a horrific attack in Port Arthur in 1996. In that attack, a lone gunman killed 35 people.
This entire incident was carried out by two individuals who shared a father-son relationship. The father’s name is Sajid Akram, who was killed on the spot, and the son’s name is Naveed Akram, who is currently admitted to the hospital in critical condition.

The attacker at Bondi Beach in Sydney is of Pakistani origin
Terrorist Attack; The men are 50-year-old Sajid Akram and 24-year-old Naveed Akram, who, according to police, were tourists of Pakistani origin and were in Australia on tourist visas. Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke revealed that Sajid Akram had initially come to Australia on a student visa in 1998.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was furious and said that he had written to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese three months ago, telling him that his policies were fueling the flames of Anti-Judaism.

- Recognizing the Palestinian State: Australia had decided to formally recognize the Palestinian state at the United Nations in August-September 2025. In a letter to Albanese on August 17, 2025, Netanyahu stated that this step was “adding fuel to the fire of antisemitism.” According to him, it encourages terrorists and fuels hatred against Jews in Australia.
- Failure to take necessary action on antisemitic incidents: Netanyahu alleges that antisemitic attacks increased in Australia after the Gaza war (from October 2023), but the government did not take any strong steps to prevent them. He attributes this to the government’s weakness.
Terrorist Attack; Sajid Akram, who carried out the attack in Australia, had a licensed gun.
According to police officials, Sajid had six firearms licenses, and those weapons were used in the attack. Australian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and have sealed off the area and increased security. Before leaving for the shooting, the father and son told their family they were going fishing. Akram lived with his family in a rented house.
Following the attack, police raided the house. According to reports, Sajid Akram ran a fruit shop.
Australian PM Albanese paid tribute.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as an act of antisemitism and terrorism. He paid tribute to the victims at Bondi Pavilion and said:
This attack was deliberately carried out on the first day of Hanukkah, targeting the Jewish community during what should have been a joyous celebration, and the Jewish community is now grieving. What happened last night has forever tainted this holiday.

According to the police, the death toll in this attack has risen to 16. This includes a 10-year-old girl and an Israeli citizen. Additionally, 45 people are in serious condition.
