Gul Panag strongly reacted to Dhruv Rathee’s viral PM Modi comment and said mocking India’s Prime Minister abroad is not democracy but harmful to the nation’s image.

Actress and former politician Gul Panag criticised YouTuber Dhruv Rathee after his controversial post targeting PM Narendra Modi went viral. Rathee had said the Prime Minister should be “embarrassed” wherever he goes, sparking major debate online. Reacting strongly, Gul Panag said people can oppose governments, protest, and debate in a democracy, but mocking India’s Prime Minister on foreign soil damages the country’s image and weakens national institutions.

Gul Panag Reacts Strongly to Dhruv Rathee’s Viral PM Modi Comment

Actress and former politician Gul Panag has strongly reacted to YouTuber Dhruv Rathee after his controversial social media post about Prime Minister Narendra Modi started going viral online. The debate quickly exploded across X (formerly Twitter), with many people supporting Gul Panag’s stand while others defended Dhruv Rathee’s criticism of the government.
Dhruv Rathee, who is currently based in Germany and is known for regularly criticising the Modi government and its policies, recently shared a post saying that PM Modi should be “embarrassed wherever he goes.” His statement came after a viral incident involving a Norwegian journalist during PM Modi’s foreign visit.
But Gul Panag clearly did not agree with the tone of the message and decided to give a strong response publicly.
Gul Panag Says Criticism Is Fine, But Mocking India’s PM Abroad Is Wrong
Replying to Dhruv Rathee’s post, Gul Panag wrote that disagreement with the government is completely normal in a democracy. According to her, people have every right to protest, debate, question leaders, and vote differently.
However, she also said that insulting the Prime Minister of India on foreign soil crosses a line.
Gul Panag wrote that mocking the office of the Prime Minister and the person representing India internationally ultimately weakens not only the institution but also the image of Indians worldwide.
Her statement quickly gained attention because many people felt she separated political criticism from national representation in a balanced way.
What Exactly Did Dhruv Rathee Say About PM Modi?
Dhruv Rathee’s original post accused PM Modi of avoiding accountability and transparency. He claimed that the Prime Minister has not held a single press conference in the last 12 years.
He also encouraged foreign journalists to question PM Modi aggressively during international visits and wrote that PM Modi should be “embarrassed” publicly until he starts answering questions directly.
The YouTuber’s post immediately triggered backlash on social media. Many users accused him of disrespecting the Prime Minister’s office and damaging India’s image globally.
Others, however, argued that questioning political leaders is an important part of democracy.
The Norway Journalist Incident That Started the Controversy
This entire controversy started after PM Modi’s recent Norway visit. During an event in Oslo, Norwegian journalist Hele Lang reportedly tried asking PM Modi questions related to democracy and human rights in India.
A video from the event went viral after PM Modi walked away without answering her questions. Social media users soon got divided into two groups — one supporting the Prime Minister and another criticising the lack of response.
Dhruv Rathee later supported the journalist through his viral post, which eventually led to Gul Panag’s sharp reaction.
Gul Panag’s Political Background Makes Her Reaction More Interesting
What made Gul Panag’s response even more interesting is her own political background. The actress has previously been associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and even contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Chandigarh.
Although she later stepped away from active politics, Gul Panag has continued speaking openly on social issues, democracy, education, and gender equality.
Because of her political experience, many social media users felt her statement carried extra weight in the ongoing debate.
