LPU Students Protest

A major protest broke out at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, after allegations surfaced that a female student was allegedly raped on the university campus. The protest, which began near the girls’ hostel during the early hours of Sunday, September 27, later turned violent as students damaged campus property and blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway.

The allegations have not been independently established. Police have registered an FIR against an unknown person based on the information provided by students and have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter. At the same time, LPU has rejected the allegations and described the claims circulating on social media as false and baseless.

What Happened at LPU in Phagwara?

According to police statements and reports from the protest site, the unrest started near the girls’ hostel at around 1 am. Students alleged that a female student staying in the hostel had been assaulted several days earlier and claimed that the hostel administration had been informed but no action was taken.

The allegations triggered a large gathering of students across the LPU campus. As the protest grew, the situation became increasingly tense, with videos from the campus showing damaged windows, flower pots and other property. Some objects were also seen on fire.

Students Climb MiG-23 and Military Tank

One of the most striking moments during the LPU protest was captured in videos showing students climbing onto military exhibits installed on the university campus.

A student was seen standing on an Indian Air Force MiG-23UM aircraft, while another video showed a group of students on top of a military tank. The visuals quickly spread across social media as hundreds of students gathered and raised slogans demanding action.

Other videos reportedly showed vandalism inside the university, including damaged window panes, flower pots and other campus property.

Phagwara-Jalandhar Highway Blocked

The LPU protest also affected traffic movement around Phagwara. Students blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara section of National Highway-44, resulting in long queues of vehicles and disruption for commuters.

Police diverted traffic through alternative routes while efforts were made to clear the blockade. The highway protest continued for several hours as students pressed their demands before the situation was brought under greater control.

Police Register FIR and Form SIT

The police response changed as information about the allegation was formally provided. Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla said an FIR had been registered against an unknown person based on the statement received from students.

Police said the investigation would include forensic examination, CCTV footage and phone-related evidence. A Special Investigation Team has also been formed to investigate the allegations, with student representatives expected to be kept informed during the proceedings.

Police officials have also said that the allegations need to be investigated scientifically before any conclusion can be reached.

LPU Denies the Allegations

While the police investigation is underway, LPU has strongly rejected the allegations circulating about the alleged rape case.

LPU Registrar Monica Gulati said the university had no truth in the rumours being circulated and described the claims as false, baseless and fabricated. The university also appealed to students, parents and the public not to circulate unverified information and to rely on official communication.

The university also released a video statement involving female students from the concerned hostel, in which they denied that such an incident had taken place.

Students Raise Other Concerns

The protest was not limited to the alleged rape case. Students also raised concerns about hostel security and administration.

One of the demands reported by police was that girls’ hostels should have only female staff. Students also sought assurances that they would not face action or victimisation for participating in the protest.

LPU Vice Chancellor Jaspal Singh Sandhu said the university would cooperate with the police investigation and address genuine student concerns.

What Happens Next in the LPU Case?

For now, the key issue is the ongoing police investigation. The FIR and SIT formation mean that the allegations are being formally examined, but the registration of an FIR does not by itself establish that the alleged crime occurred or determine who is responsible.

Investigators are expected to examine available CCTV footage, forensic evidence, phone records and statements before reaching conclusions. LPU has maintained that the allegations being circulated are rumours, while students have demanded a transparent investigation.

The developments at LPU have also drawn significant attention because of the scale of the protest, the highway blockade and the dramatic visuals from the campus. As the investigation continues, verified information from the police and university authorities will be important in separating established facts from claims circulating on social media.

Pulse by Anubhav will continue to follow the LPU and Phagwara developments and provide updates based on verified information as the investigation progresses.
