  • Sexual reproduction in flowering plants involves fusion of male and female gametes.
  • Flower is the main reproductive organ of plants.
  • It has two parts: Androecium (male) and Gynoecium (female).
  • Pollen grains (male gametophyte) are formed in anther by microsporogenesis.
  • Embryo sac (female gametophyte) is formed inside ovule by megasporogenesis.
  • Pollination = transfer of pollen from anther to stigma.
  • Types of pollination:
    • Autogamy (same flower)
    • Geitonogamy (same plant)
    • Xenogamy (different plant)
  • Pollination agents: wind, water, insects, animals.
  • Pollen germinates on stigma and forms pollen tube.
  • Male gametes travel through pollen tube to ovule.
  • Double fertilisation occurs:
    • One gamete + egg → Zygote
    • One gamete + polar nuclei → Endosperm
  • After fertilisation:
    • Ovule → Seed
    • Ovary → Fruit
  • Endosperm provides nutrition to embryo.
  • Embryo develops into new plant.
  • Special processes:
    • Apomixis → seed formation without fertilisation
    • Polyembryony → more than one embryo in a seed

👉 Flow: Flower → Pollination → Fertilisation → Seed → Fruit
