- Sexual reproduction in flowering plants involves fusion of male and female gametes.
- Flower is the main reproductive organ of plants.
- It has two parts: Androecium (male) and Gynoecium (female).
- Pollen grains (male gametophyte) are formed in anther by microsporogenesis.
- Embryo sac (female gametophyte) is formed inside ovule by megasporogenesis.
- Pollination = transfer of pollen from anther to stigma.
- Types of pollination:
- Autogamy (same flower)
- Geitonogamy (same plant)
- Xenogamy (different plant)
- Pollination agents: wind, water, insects, animals.
- Pollen germinates on stigma and forms pollen tube.
- Male gametes travel through pollen tube to ovule.
- Double fertilisation occurs:
- One gamete + egg → Zygote
- One gamete + polar nuclei → Endosperm
- After fertilisation:
- Ovule → Seed
- Ovary → Fruit
- Endosperm provides nutrition to embryo.
- Embryo develops into new plant.
- Special processes:
- Apomixis → seed formation without fertilisation
- Polyembryony → more than one embryo in a seed
👉 Flow: Flower → Pollination → Fertilisation → Seed → Fruit
